By Simon Peter Labeja – Radio King
GULU – Gulu University Students Association (GUASA) says they plan to stage a public demonstration over faculty allowances for students under government sponsorship. The strike will be next week if no proper attention is given to their concerns.

The students feel they are being neglected and unfairly treated. The spokesperson for the students’ body, Keifer Kato says the plan to stage the demonstration was reached at during a meeting between students and their leaders held in the students boardroom at the main campus today.

Only one remittance
He says faculty allowances for students on government sponsorship at Gulu University is remitted only once for the entire course duration as opposed to other public universities which are done annually.

Malicious plan
The students have also complained about funds for their electricity Bill being remitted to their hostel owners. Some says it is a malicious plan by the University Administration to swindle their money. They have demanded for explanation from the university Administration.

Room for consultation
The spokesperson for Gulu University Lecturers’ Association, scholastica Amito told journalists today that the university administration received a list of complains from the students and working hard to settle the matters. She urged the students to give some room for consultation.

On my side I think the students have that rights to ask for what they think is right, but they should remember that there is a limit, eg if they start to demonstrate (strike) then they should know that in case of anything like closing the university will affect them most because for eg if you are finishing this year it will prolong your study which will as well prolong the period of getting jobs, so they should ask, but should always avoid strike. now this should not even make the administrators to react negatively since the students will suffer most.

    thanks am Martine

As far as am concerned, the option they want to take may be the only better alternative as it had been so successfull especially to their senior, the academic staffs of all the three Public universities ie Gulu, Makerere and Kyambogo. Although my advise to them is that they need to welcome repacations attached as literates because its inevitable.

Good luck for the struggle (+ve one only)

    Please students,
My advise to you is that, be realistic, talk instead of taking the other option because it works and I say it with experience. Do not give a bad tag to this new centre of Civilisation.

    Good luck!

I dont know why the government is never in good terms with the students it sponsors. The problem is not only in Gulu universty but also else where in govt universities.. my advise to students is devise more diplomatic means of solving the problem because for sure STRIKES are not health
